Dear Friends and Family,
New City (Oakland), Same Mission (Love God and Love our Neighbors).
Yep, you read that right, we are moving north 400 miles October 1st to Oakland, California.
One of my favorite parables in the Bible is the one about the lost coin.
8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’
I know when I lose my wallet, about once a day, we tear up the house. You retrace your steps, trying to remember where the precious object is and of course as the saying goes, it is always in the last place you look. Commenting on this parable, Jared C. Wilson says “If the aim of God is that the knowledge of his glory will cover the earth like the waters cover the sea, inspecting between the cracks in the floor makes total sense. Our God is the God of the universe. And he is the God of square inches.”
Many people see the inner cities, our neighborhoods, as the cracks in the floor. The places filled with caked on dirt and darkness and nothing good can come from there. All the while God is ruling and the Kingdom of God finds the most value in the least of these. God knows why and how to search, He also knows how to rejoice and celebrate those He finds. Let us with the same fervor search, find, rejoice and celebrate.
Jesus is turning on the lights, getting out the broom and the dust pan and searching diligently for His lost coins. He has given us His spirit and sent us out to be among the floorboards and dust bunnies. To be heralds of the good news of the Kingdom, the Kingdom of the poor, the lowly and the servants who are sons and daughters of God and co-heirs with Christ.
In the process of working, playing, eating, resting and celebrating in West Oakland, what will we do? As an organization World Impact wants to focus on these four areas and we will be participating in each one.
- Planting healthy urban churches
- Resourcing urban leaders
- Developing missional partnerships
- Demonstrating compassion and justice
We will be living in the community of West Oakland working primarily with Bay Community Fellowship. We will be seeking to build into this church and in turn the community. Our time will take the shape of helping with investing in kids, families and felt needs. World Impact is also opening a men’s training home connected to Bay Community Fellowship to train men to become pastors of future churches and we will have a hand in helping with this.
There are a few specific things you can pray for: new relationships to form, a fresh energy to love and serve others, and a reliance on the Holy Spirit to help us make decisions. As always check us out on our blog (www.thedalylife.wordpress.com) and then come and visit us in Oakland.
Love you guys,
Sean and Allison
